Josh Heathcock, Fairhope’s lead grower with over 17 years of service to the city, walked me through the greenhouse process and shared how the vibrant flowers seen throughout town begin their journey. From small seedlings to mature, ready-to-plant flowers, everything is carefully grown and maintained by our city crews.
This work goes far beyond planting flowers. It is a coordinated effort to design, grow, and maintain the seasonal landscapes that brighten public spaces across Fairhope. The team also creates the city’s signature hanging baskets, each one hand-assembled and grown to overflow with color.
Crews are currently preparing for summer plantings that will soon be installed throughout the city, including Blew My Mind Evolvulus, Mecardonia Gold Dust, Penta Grafitti, Luscious Citron Lantana, Coreopsis Sunray, Angelonia Serena Blue, Zinnia Lilliput Mix, Trixi Old Glory Mix, Vinca Valiant Mix, and Caladiums.
From greenhouse to garden bed, each plant reflects the care, planning, and attention to detail that goes into maintaining Fairhope’s seasonal landscapes.
Spending time in the greenhouses, I was truly blown away by the dedication, skill, and pride of our horticulture team. Their passion for their work is evident in every detail, and it plays such a vital role in keeping Fairhope so beautifully maintained year-round.
